Exporters making use of
the port of Savannah in the
United States will not have to
incur additional weighbridge
expenses in order to meet
a new requirement of the
international Safety of Life at
Sea (Solas) Convention.
“In conjunction
with the International
Longshoremen’s Association,
the GPA (Georgia Ports
Authority) currently weighs
all loaded export containers,
and will continue to do so
at no cost to the customer,”
said Griff Lynch, incoming
executive director at GPA.
He was reacting to the
approval by the US Coast
Guard of the use of statecalibrated
scales already
in operation in the Port of
Savannah
The Port of Savannah’s
Garden City Terminal, the
largest single container
terminal in the US,
features four gates with 48
interchange lanes and two
on-dock rail facilities.
It moves over 3.3 million
TEUs a year.
