The Western Cape’s Provincial Freight Strategy (PFS) has seen the creation of a freight forum to help realise some of the PFS'sinitiatives, says Corinne Gallant, deputy director of freight in the Western Cape government (WCG).According to Gallant, in addition to adding impetus to initiatives such as the forum, the PFS has also resulted in growing trust between the WCG and the freight sector.“Industry stakeholders were involved in the development of the PFS and have seen what the WCG is doing to address issues in the freight sector.”As for the year ahead, Gallant says the focus will be on improved data and information management.“The development of a Freight Management System is on the cards. This will be a central management system where all freight data such as road freight traffic and crash statistics are captured for analysis and planning purposes.”In addition, there would be stronger focus on tackling some of the more technical issues such as modal shift, improvements to key infrastructure, and road traffic law enforcement to move towards better freight outcomes, she said.
