Five-year boom in Intra-Asian sea trade

Intra-Asian container trade has grown rapidly in the last five years.

According to Clarkson’s shipping database, it has grown at an estimated average of 10% per annum, to reach 48 million TEUs in 2014 (more than 25% of global container trade).

Total containership capacity deployed on intra-Asian routes reached 1.7m TEUs at the start of July 2015, up from 1.1m TEUs at the start of 2011.

Vessel capacity deployed by Chinese liners (the big players in this trade) has also increased quickly, to total 0.40m TEUs at the end of 1H 2015, more than double the total at start 2011.

The capacity currently deployed by Chinese operators accounts for 24% of total intra-Asian deployed capacity.

Growth has been very firm this year, with Chinese-operated boxship capacity rising 13% in the first half of 2015.
