Fewer late vessels, but the degree of delays increasing

Schedule reliability appears to be on an upward trajectory, improving by 5.1 percentage points M/M in May 2020 to 74.9%, but 5.3 percentage points  below the May 2019, according to the latest monthly Global Liner Performance (GLP) report published by maritime consultancy Sea-Intelligence.

But on the other hand, the average delay for late vessel arrivals  has been consistently high throughout 2020, and has been on an upward trend since March, says Alan Murphy, CEO of Sea-Intelligence.
“Both April and May 2020 figures were the highest for the respective months.”

In terms of the top-15 deep-sea carriers, Hamburg Süd was the most reliable in May with schedule reliability of 84.7%, followed by ZIM with 83.5%. PIL recorded the lowest figure at 68.1%. Of the 15 carriers, 13 recorded a M/M improvement, with ZIM in double digits. It was also the only top-15 carrier to record a Y/Y improvement, with PIL and Wan Hai recording double-digit declines.
