Trucking in Africa is set to become more costly and challenging rather than faster and cheaper despite investment in roads across the continent, warns a World Bank report on how climate change could affect Africa’s transport sector. According to the report African governments will be investing an average of US$4.6 billion a year in road infrastructure up to 2030. These and existing roads will be subject to higher temperatures, flooding and other weather-related stresses. “Virtually all models show that weather extremes will put considerable pressure on Africa’s road system. “Climate-related damage to the road infrastructure will also cause more frequent disruptions to the movement of people and goods, with direct consequences on economic productivity,” warns the report.
