INCOTERMS, SHIPPING terms, documentation, wharfage, merchant haulage versus carrier haulage, dangerous goods ... these were just some of the issues covered in last week's lively Freight Focus 2000, an interactive seminar designed to enhance the competence of shipping staff.
The event, organised by FTW, was made possible by the generosity not only of the sponsors, Safmarine, but of the 5-strong panel of experts who gave their time freely to offer insights and advice gained over many years of experience in the industry.
Facilitator and 'shipper from hell' in the words of panellist Rod Eaton, Paul Clarke kept the proceedings going at a brisk pace with a healthy helping of humorous interjections, while the panel, representing 130 years of shipping experience, produced a flow of valuable information. They included SAAFF (SA Association of Freight Forwarders) Gauteng chairman Des Mooney, consultant Don Strachan, SA Shippers Council executive director Nolene Lossau and Rod Eaton of ASABOSA (Association of Ships Agents and Brokers of SA).
The full-day event attracted participants from a wide spectrum of the industry ranging from shippers to forwarding agents, to shipping lines and training companies.
Similar events could be planned in the future, depending on industry response.
If you would like to attend a future Freight Focus 2000 workshop, email joyo@nowmedia.co.za or send a fax to the editor on (011)327 4094.
Your input on the format and content of future events is vital.
