DP World adds weekly China-Maputo shipping link

DP World will launch a weekly shipping service connecting China with Maputo and Dar es Salaam in late November, adding a routing option for cargo moving between the Far East and southern and East Africa.

The China Africa Link would be operated by the group’s Shipping Solutions AMEA business, DP World said in a statement.

The port rotation will be Shanghai-Ningbo-Nansha-Port Klang Westport-Dar es Salaam-Maputo-Singapore-Shanghai, linking three Chinese export gateways with the two African ports.

The service will target imports including machinery, electronics, construction materials and automotive components, alongside African exports such as agricultural products, minerals and other commodities.

“Global trade is changing, and our customers need more than shipping capacity. They need reliable connections, greater choice and the flexibility to adapt as trade patterns evolve,” said Ganesh Raj, global chief operating officer of Marine Services at DP World.

The launch complements investments in port infrastructure in Mozambique and Tanzania, according to the group.

A $165 million (approximately R2.75 billion) expansion of DP World’s Maputo container terminal is designed to more than double its handling capacity. In Tanzania, the group has committed more than $500 million (approximately R8.32bn) to modernising the Port of Dar es Salaam.
