CPPI draws more criticism for ‘unfair’ data analysis

The operations director for MSC in Southern Africa has added his voice to criticism over how the World Bank assesses data for its Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), which consistently ranks South African ports as among the worst in the world.

According to Captain Ian Rosario: “The data is reduced to a common denominator, to generate an index for benchmarking efficiency across the terminals worldwide.

“Additionally, the Fuel Consumption Index accounting for greenhouse gas emissions contributes to the equation. This is linked to the delays, affecting the larger vessels relatively more than the smaller size vessels, as the larger vessels consume more fuel for recovery of lost time, effectively losing index points.

“However, when viewed through the lens of South African port operations, the relevance and fairness of the CPPI come into question.”
