POLICE CORRUPTION is the single most destructive force in the fight against crime syndicates at CX's City Deep terminal.
That's the view of SA Railway and Harbour Workers Union (SARHWU) sources who believe that the time has come for the Minister of Police to intervene.
Alleged involvement by the police in crime syndicates is no secret. Well placed sources claim that even when perpetrators are caught red-handed they are seldom convicted and the crimes generally go unpunished.
Respect for the law-upholding activities of the police, particularly at Kaserne, is at an all-time low, according to these sources.
Union spokesmen, say that workers and management in the terminal are working hand in hand to abolish the problem, but without the co-operation of the police, many of whom clearly have a separate agenda, all efforts are neutralised.
Union members, lured away by corrupt syndicate members, are losing their jobs and benefits.
And because of the perception of police incompetence in apprehending criminals, it's reached the stage where many criminal activities are not even reported.
There are several cases of our drivers being approached and bribed by these crime syndicates, according to one source.
When our drivers report this to the police, nothing is done, which is why they would rather keep quiet.
CX is working to control the terminal, but once the container is outside, anything can happen.
