Chairman of Institute of Chartered Ship- brokers keen to foster ties with local community THE SA shipbroking industry is part of the international maritime family and should make use of this to develop its resources, says chairman of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers Barbara Fletcher.
Fletcher is on an African tour to promote the institute and its activities and to offer assistance in developing the shipping industry on the continent. The institute is active in 63 countries and represents most aspects of the shipbroking industry.
Fletcher says that local shipping companies should make use of the institute's training and development facilities.
The trend in Europe is to provide professional qualifications together with practical training, Fletcher says.
International shippers have found that although it was important to provide sound academic skills in the form of a degree, graduates also had to understand the industrial environment in which they were required to work.
She said she was encouraged by the growing awareness of the need for training in SA.
