There hasn’t been much progress regarding Eskom’s road to rail migration for its coal supplies and a collective solution is needed to ensure minimum job losses in the road transport sector.
“Eskom is contracted with thousands of trucking companies and we need to sit together to design a plan that ensures the livelihood of the road transporters,” said Transnet commercial unit general manager, Divyesh Kalan.
He was responding to a question raised during the Fossil Fuel Foundation’s ‘Infrastructure and Logistics for the Coal Industry’ workshop held in Johannesburg this week.
Kalan added that Eskom had not finalised its coal sourcing strategy which made it problematic for Transnet to integrate the power parastatal’s needs into its own capacity creation strategy.
“We are aware that we need to broaden our stakeholder engagement and collaborate on strategies,” he said.
