ZIMBABWE AND Zambia are providing lucrative business opportunities for roadfreight specialists BP Freight. Consistent demand from Zimbabwe and growth in Zambia’s mining and agricultural sectors are pumping up the volumes, says operations director Brendon Sundelowitz. On the Zimbabwe route the company moves chemicals and mining equipment, raw food products sourced internationally, as well as textiles from China and Portugal. “We are moving about 10 loads a week into Zimbabwe, of which three are consolidations into Harare,” says Sundelowitz. “One consolidation a week is destined for Zambia as well as a couple of full loads into Lusaka and the Copperbelt. And volumes are increasing – much of the cargo heavy machinery.” BP Freight has an office in Harare and intends establishing a sales office in Lusaka. Haulage services are offered to Malawi, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland. Co-director Peter Loram focuses on over-border operations and sales. The company’s domestic business has also grown, prompting the purchase of small vehicles – from 1 to 8 tons – for dedicated and express loads. A new domestic division caters mainly for the transport of machine and auto parts, nonperishable foodstuffs and chemicals. Two full-time staff members – and four vehicles – have been assigned to the division which also outsources some of its transport needs.
