‘Available courses don’t teach what we need’

“The Transport Education and Training Authority (Teta) offers no recognised courses that are beneficial to my staff in the transport sector even though we pay our skills levy every month. We therefore do on-the-job training as it costs a fortune for courses if you use outside training providers and cannot be reimbursed for the training,” says Raj Maistry, CEO of JVC Freight Carriers. While JVC itself is not experiencing any skills shortages, Maistry notes that it is the youngsters coming into the industry who would gain most if there were comprehensive courses available. This includes information about the various border posts, document requirements, transit times etc. “The most important aspect is to teach them how to ensure everything is running as smoothly as possible and that there will be no delays in trucks crossing the borders due to problems with paperwork and the like. “We are currently waiting for Saaff and the Durban Harbour Carriers to identify courses that will provide all the vital information to benefit us and our staff,” Maistry concludes.
