Asian airfreight hit by poor global economy

The world’s major airfreight region of Asia has suffered a drop in cargo demand as trade to and from the area tightened in line with the global economic downturn.

According to preliminary figures from the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), member airlines moved 5.29 million freight tonne kilometres (FTK) of cargo in August on scheduled international services, a 0.3% decline from last August’s figures.

With freight capacity on international scheduled services rising 3.3% in August over last year to 8.68m available FTKs, the average international freight load factor for the month stood at 61% - down 2.2% from August 2014.
