Austrian Airlines will fly directly to Cape Town from Vienna twice a week from October 2018.
Cape Town Air Access, a partnership between Wesgro, the City of Cape Town, the Western Cape Government, Airports Company of South Africa, Cape Town Tourism and South African Tourism, secured the deal as part of its air access strategy that is aimed at increasing the number of direct international air routes into the Western Cape.
In a statement Austrian Airlines CCO Andreas Otto said a Boeing 777 would service the route.
“Cape Town represents an expansion of our offering to long-haul tourist destinations in the winter,” he said.
This is the tenth direct flight to be announced in just under two years under the Cape’s air access strategy.
Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille and minister of economic opportunities in the province Alan Winde welcomed the announcement saying the landing of yet another direct flight in Cape Town was a major boost in efforts to connect more flights to Cape Town.
The Air Access team’s success to date has resulted in a R3-billion boost to the Western Cape economy. The team has not only landed ten new routes but also facilitated the expansion of another ten routes for the Cape.
