‘Final declaration’
formulated
HEADS OF Customs from 26 African countries recently met in Johannesburg for an all-Africa customs conference entitled “A United Vision for African Customs”.
Arranged by the SA Revenue Services (SARS), papers were specially selected to bolster the NEPAD objectives and to promote trade both within Africa and with the rest of the world, Edward Little, executive director of the SA Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF), told FTW.
After group discussion of the issues listed below, a ‘Final Declaration’ was formulated:
l Is there a need for closer cohesion and co-operation between customs administrations?;
l Within the context of the African Union and NEPAD, list the priorities on which customs administrations should focus;
l Develop a plan of action to give effect to the strategic priorities;
l Outline the institutional forms that are necessary to effect closer co-operation.
