African airline cooperation could lead to more successful global plans

Intra-Africa trade is on the rise and more African airlines should co-operate with each other, rather than partnering with foreign carriers, Astral Aviation chief executive, Sanjeev Gadhia, reportedly told African Cargo News.

Speaking at the Freighters and Belly Cargo World Conference 2015 held in Abu Dhabi last week, Gadhia reportedly said: “The continent is so big that it is hard for African airlines to meet requirements. African airlines rarely co-operate with each other, they prefer to co-operate with foreign airlines and we feel that if African airlines start co-operating amongst themselves there will be a big opportunity to increase our competitiveness.”

Gadhia said he felt African carriers partnered with foreign airlines in hopes of an increased global presence; however, by focusing on Africa, this may lead to global plans being more successful.
