South Africa's logistics sector faces numerous challenges, making it essential for companies to continually invest in operational efficiencies. In response, Teraka Logistics rolled out a new transport management system in early August. This system enhances visibility, enabling users to track the status and location of cargo in real time throughout its journey. Additionally, it improves load distribution by allowing precise monitoring of product locations, thereby optimising the performance of each truck.According to commercial manager Natalie Chippendale, South Africa is making strides in aligning with global logistics trends, especially in adopting digital technologies and sustainable practices. “The pace of innovation and technology adoption in South Africa does lag behind that of developed countries, which does sometimes present challenges in effectively managing and mitigating risks,” she told Freight News. “At Teraka, our risk mitigation strategies are rigorously managed daily, in line with strict policies designed to safeguard all parties involved. We are dedicated to upholding high standards in our operations. We work closely with our suppliers and customers to ensure that each shipment meets the necessary requirements and is fully insured against loss or damage from origin to destination.”She said it was critical to employ advanced management systems to assess and minimise risks related to non-delivery, theft, accidents and unforeseen circumstances. “Logistics companies like ours have to be committed to finding innovative and adaptive solutions to continuously improve our processes and stay competitive in the evolving global logistics landscape.”Commenting on challenges, Chippendale said the state of infrastructure, particularly outdated road and rail networks and overburdened ports, and until recently an unreliable electricity supplier, were top of mind for the logistics sector.“The logistics sector is, however, ripe with opportunities for growth and enhancement. Key areas include leveraging technology to boost efficiency, improving regional trade, and adopting sustainable practices to align with global environmental standards. There is also significant potential in refining cross-border logistics and enhancing integration with global supply chains,” said Chippendale. She added that technology was a critical enabler for the sector, transforming logistics in several impactful ways. “Real-time tracking systems now offer enhanced visibility, allowing for precise monitoring of shipments and better route optimisation. AI and machine learning are pivotal in predictive analytics and demand forecasting, enabling more informed decision-making. Automation and robotics are streamlining warehouse management.”According to Chippendale, logistics companies that capitalise on this will find themselves with a competitive advantage.
