Abandoned oil rig update

The giant oil rig, Pentagon 5000, which was being towed to India for scrapping but was abandoned by her towing tug to be left drifting and unattended off the coast of SA, is now being towed in to the Port of Coega by her salvors, Smit Amandla.

In an update, Smit Amandla executive Claire Gomes told FTWO yesterday that the rig and her salvage tug MV Smit Amandla were still heading northward towards Algoa Bay.

They had also pulled out to be about 67 nautical miles off-shore to keep clear of the in-shore southbound traffic lane.

The tow has, however, slowed, and is now two days behind her original estimated time of arrival (ETA). The rig is now only expected to arrive at Coega on Thursday August 27.
