Zimbabwe war vets force Customs to release impounded vehicles

THE BREAKDOWN in law and order in Zimbabwe has extended to the customs yard in Harare. A mob of people styling themselves war veterans forced customs officials to release two vehicles that had been impounded for non-payment of duty.
The vehicles had been bought in South Africa and were said to be in transit.
Death threats were made against senior officials of the customs department, who hurriedly released the vehicles. The yard is only a few hundred metres from Harare's biggest police station.
The acting head of the department, Liberty Masilela, appealed to the police for protection, but they said they did not have enough officers.
In the event that the war vets return to make further demands, we can swiftly move in to make arrests if called in time, said the officer in charge of crime, Clever Mushyavanhu.
