JOY ORLEK
NOVEMBER 1 will see the introduction of a compulsory weighbridge on the South African side of the Grobler’s Bridge border post targeting traffic moving from Gauteng to Zambia/DRC via Botswana.
It’s a joint initiative between various South African government agencies and the road transport industry represented by the Federation of East and Southern African Road Transport Associations (FESARTA).
All heavy goods vehicles en route to the Grobler’s Bridge border post will be weighed at the Limpopo province weighbridge, eight kilometres before the border post on the South African side.
Legally loaded vehicles will receive a weighbridge printout, stamped “Vehicle/Combination Legally Loaded” and signed by the traffic officer on duty.
Customs has the right to call for this document. If the driver is unable to produce it, the vehicle/combination will not be permitted to transit through the border post but will be required to offload or re-distribute the load if found to be overloaded.
Once implemented and established at Grobler’s Bridge, the system is expected to be extended to other border posts in the SADC region.
