Ongoing investment in cargo management technology by the Beira-based J&J Africa group has ensured that users of its warehouses enjoy the benefits of both track and trace during transit and advanced warehouse management tools while the cargo is being stored or transhipped.

The strength of Beira Logistics Terminals (BLT), Independent Beira Logistics Terminals & Services (IBLT&S), and its operations in Lusaka and Harare lies within the synergy created between the different companies in the J&J group, all of which share the same ICT infrastructure, according to Jonathan Middleton, CEO – warehousing for J&J. By combining the strengths of the different companies, the group is able to provide an efficient supply chain all the way from vessel through to final destination (or vice versa), he says.

On the transport side all the group’s trucks are fitted with satellite tracking devices that provide 24-hour monitoring 365 days a year. Cargo owners and their agents can track the movement of the cargo in real time from the time it is despatched to arrival at the destination, which could be one of the group’s warehouse facilities.

On arrival all cargo is accepted at the warehouse through a controlled and fully documented process. Weighbridges at the entrance and exit of the different warehouse facilities are fully integrated into the warehouse management system. Clients are alerted if shortages are identified. In the warehouse a thirdparty provider is responsible for the depot management system that allows clients to manage their stock-holding and deliveries.

The group’s cargo tallying system can be designed or modified to suit the client’s particular needs and requirements. Clients also have access to the J&J online tracking tools, daily tracking updates and pre-alerts, which can be customised to fit their requirements.

The warehouse technology provides the same flexibility for solutions to be tailored to the needs and budget of individual clients as the vehicle tracking systems, according to Middleton.

Users of our warehouses enjoy the benefits of advanced warehouse management tools while the cargo is being stored or transhipped. – Jonathan Middleton
