VW ships 5000 cars a month

Driving on the freeway past
Port Elizabeth harbour one is
more likely than not to see rows
of Volkswagens waiting to be
loaded – or a giant pure car
carrier in port loading up to
1 350 units at a time.
According to Volkswagen
South Africa spokesperson
Matt Gennrich, the company
is currently exporting an
average of 5 465 Polo 250 units
a month mainly to the United
Kingdom, Japan, Australia and
New Zealand.
Smaller markets are Hong
Kong, Singapore and countries
in Europe.
Volkswagen accounts for more
than 60% of imported vehicles
and 98% of the vehicle exports
passing through Port Elizabeth,
according to Gennrich.
Logistically, he says the
biggest challenges are the
high port costs and long lead
times due to the distance from
the markets.
