Union/employers labour contract finally passed last week

Last week, after almost a year of talks and a lengthy go-slow, the members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) have finally approved a new five-year labour contract agreement.

A union statement said this had the support of 82% of its membership.

The contract was also accepted by the employers’ body, the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA).

It applies to about 20 000 workers at the 29 US West Coast ports.
