WHEN THE Kairos sets sail from Durban today (February 27) it will inaugurate a new service which Unidel, the joint venture between Unicorn and Delmas, offers to the Indian Ocean, Bombay and Dubai.
The service is named MIDAS (Middle East, India Direct Africa Service), offering capacity for a variety of cargo types including dry bulk containers, reefer containers, heavy lift cargoes and general break bulk, says Unidel Line manager Allan Steveni. It will operate on a 17-day frequency.
A two-vessel service has operated for the past two years, with Kairos and Pharos serving Indian Ocean destinations and East African ports. A third vessel, Lilongwe has now been introduced, and regular calls have been extended to include Bombay and Dubai as ports of call.
The new service, says Steveni, will also create better opportunities for cargoes into and out of the African sub-continent into India, Dubai and the Indian Ocean islands.
The service guarantees schedule integrity, coverage of a full range of ports and interchangeability of equipment, and is backed by a strong support system in the industry, he says.
