Four ports in the Suez had to be closed after a sandstorm passing through the Middle East caused poor visibility at the canal on Wednesday. At the time of going to press, the ports remained closed.
Egyptian publication, Middle East News Agency (MENA), quoted an official from the General Authority for Red Sea Ports as saying that visibility in the areas had been reduced to a distance of 1 500 metres.
The unseasonal sandstorm has swept across the Middle East, blanketing Beirut, Cairo and Damascus. The anomaly has caused at least five deaths and sent hundreds of civilians to hospitals to attend to breathing problems.
