Twenty working days from Durban to Malawi

Between 2008 and 2010 SADC undertook a trial run to measure the transit time from Durban to Blantyre in Malawi. With seven border posts to be crossed, the study revealed that the truck driver had to have separate documentation for each border post. The final result was that 20 working days were spent just transiting through the seven border posts. According to Eddie Kaluwa, founder of Combine Cargo, an easier process using three companies was trialled and when the border processes were simplified it only took five days to move cargo from Durban to Blantyre. Curtis said to ultimately improve trade in the region serious attention to border posts would be necessary to bring about the faster movement of goods.
