AHEAD OF plans to widen and deepen the Port of Durban to accommodate modern container ships,
a new 530m long municipal services tunnel is being installed below sea level to link Durban’s Point and Bluff areas. The R210 million tunnel is being constructed for the Ethekweni Municipality with precast concrete segments and will be placed 30m below sea level and 9m below the sea-bed. It will replace the current 50-year-old immersed tube tunnel which carries services such as electrical supplies and sewage from the Point Road pump station to treatment works at the Bluff.
