Trucks blockade N3 in Free State (*)

Trucks have blockaded the N3 between Warden and Villiers in the Free State from early on Tuesday morning.

The N3 Toll Concession warned road users via Twitter that the road had been blocked in both directions.

“N3TC has just been informed that traffic on the N3 Toll Route is currently obstructed near Makiti (between Warden and Villiers in the Free State) by trucks blocking the road in both directions. Road users are warned to approach the area with caution,” N3TC tweeted.

N3TC posted this second tweet at 08h05 after initially warning about the blockade at 06h12 and said it would share more information as soon as it became available.

All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa chairperson, Sifiso Nyathi, said the protest was against the logistics sector hiring foreign national employees.

Nyathi confirmed that there was a blockage on the N3, and gave as the reason the continuing refusal of employers to stop employing foreigners instead of South Africans.

* This story has since been updated: The N3TC posted an update on Twitter at 11h29 that the N3 Durban-bound lanes had been opened following the earlier blockade on the N3, although there was still a traffic backlog due to the disruption.
