Transport MEC probes Gautrain/truck crash after second incident in five months

The scene of the crash yesterday.

The Gauteng department of Transport will launch a full investigation into a deadly truck crash on the Gautrain line in Pretoria yesterday, said Transport MEC, Ishmail Vadi.

Questions are being raised about the crash site as this is the second truck incident in five months.

One person died and another was seriously injured after a truck crashed through cement barriers onto the Gautrain line in Pretoria yesterday. Tshwane emergency services said the truck reportedly lost control and crashed through the barriers, landing on the tracks in the afternoon.

Gautrain services were disrupted on the Pretoria to Hatfield line, with buses being brought in to ferry passengers.

According to Vadi this was not the first truck to crash on Loveday Road. “In November last year the driver of a load-bearing vehicle also misjudged the steep incline.”

The MEC is set to meet with the City of Tshwane to find ways of preventing similar accidents.  “It does seem if you have trucks coming through here with heavy loads it poses a risk, both to the residents and to the train services.”
