THE DEPARTMENT of Transport’s National Traffic Information System (NaTIS) has just gone electronic. February 17 was the launch date for eNaTIS at all the country’s vehicle testing stations, vehicle registering authorities and drivers’ licence testing centres. According to the department, the system administers R3 billion rand a year and is used at more than 1 753 sites throughout the nine provinces, performing around 40 000 transactions per hour. The new electronic service allows all trafficrelated transactions to be conducted through automated teller machines (ATMs) and the internet, according to the department. In the build-up to the launch of the eNaTIS, the department says it met role-players including vehicle manufacturers, importers and builders, operators of testing stations, and provincial representatives responsible for registering authorities and driving licence testing centres.
