Transnet is planning to export both skills and locos to the rest of Africa. It is in the process of establishing Marine and Rail Academies of Excellence to meet South African and African needs for skills as part of the group’s strategy to help position South Africa as a “skills development hub” for the rest of the continent. According to Transnet group chief executive Brian Molefe, there are at present no such academies on the African continent, and there is a growing demand for such training as countries revive their rail systems. Skills and facilities that are already assembling locomotives for South African use under licence from General Electric will also be able to supply the rest of Africa.
