A balance between the
available training and the
scarcity level of skills in the
industry is the driving factor
in establishing a successful
syllabus, according to Jacqui
Merrington of the School of
Shipping (SoS).
“The world of shipping
covers a diverse range of
matters,” she told FTW,
“from international trade
and freight forwarding
to dangerous goods and
perishable goods exporting.”
To cover this spectrum
of subjects, the SoS
teaches the learner about
all the procedures and
documentation – with the
available training covering
the scarce and critical
skills identified by the SA
Qualifications Authority
(SAQA).
“This adult tuition is
specifically related to shorebased
shipping practice and
procedures,” Merrington
added, “which has full
Transport Education Training
Authority (Teta) and SA
Maritime Safety Authority
(Samsa) accreditation.”
Training is available
in-house, in the form of
tailor-made courses in line
with a company’s specific
requirements, on a full-time
or part-time basis - or regular
classroom-based short
courses, all fully recognised
in the shipping industry.
“Students can also study
at their own pace from their
home PC, an office PC or
even at an internet café,”
said Merrington, “with
built-in checks that indicate
when assignments are due
and alerts for employers if
learners are experiencing
difficulties.”
Students earn credits
towards a National
Certificate in Freight
Forwarding, finally
qualifying in the national
certificate ID 59365 - NQF
Level 3.
“This is your first step
towards a Fiata diploma,”
Merrington added, “approved
by the SA Association of
Freight Forwarders (Saaff)
and awarding you with
international recognition.”
