The ports of Durban and Port Elizabeth are getting themselves set up with new ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, sufficient to see them through the next two decades of vessel handling. In Durban’s case, the semisubmersible ship, the Zhen Hua 27, sailed into the port in late November bearing three brand new tandem-lift STS cranes made by Chinesebased Shangai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company. And, when the Zhen Hua 27 left Durban a month later, bound for Port Elizabeth, she was carrying two multi-million rand STS cranes manufactured by Impsa. The equipment was assembled in Durban seven years ago and commissioned into service towards the end of 2005. TPT Eastern Cape GM, Siya Mhlaluka, was confident that they would give proud service at the port of PE. “At just seven years old these two cranes are still very new in terms of service and will serve as major assets for cargo operations in the Eastern Cape.” CAPTION The Port of PE … beneficiary of two cranes from Durban.
