South Africa was the top exporter to Mozambique in 2013, with the European Union being the biggest importer from the country. According to European Union statistics, goods and services from South Africa accounted for 26.4% of all imports into Mozambique. The value was R30bn. India was next with a 14.1% market share (R16 bn), followed by China (12.7% share valued at R14 bn). This is just ahead of the European Union’s share of 11.4%, or R13.5bn. The other top 10 suppliers to Mozambique are Australia (4.3%), USA (3.2%), Japan (2,8%), Singapore (2.7%), Thailand (1.6%), and Brazil (1.3%). There is little balance to the flows, however. Mozambique’s biggest export destination by far is the European Union, on 36.6%, or R18bn. South Africa is next, with a share of 30.5% (R15bn), followed by China (9.4% and R4.5bn). The next five are India (5.1%), Zimbabwe (2%), USA (1.6%), Japan (1.4%) and Russia (1.45).
