To her resting place … finally

The stranded tanker Phoenix was finally hauled off the rocks at Sheffield Beach north of Durban by two tugs at 07:00 on Saturday September 3, in a lengthy operation handled by salvage experts Smit Amandla Marine and Subtech. The next move, according to Captain Saroor Ali, regional manager East Coast for the SA Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa), is to hold the ship close to the helicopter base at Durban’s Virginia Airport while R10 million of equipment and the salvage team is airlifted to safety. Once everything is off, she will bid a welcome farewell to the SA coast – with the Phoenix then to be towed offshore where she will be scuttled in about 2 000 metres of water.
