Regional air carrier Airlink has not suspended ticket sales to Mozambique, as reported earlier this week, because of issues regarding repatriating of funds from that country.
The carrier has stated that: “Airlink said it might have to suspend issuing tickets in Mozambique if that country's authorities continue to block the repatriation of its revenue from local ticket sales.”
However, “Since Airlink sent its letter last week, there have been some positive developments, including a meeting that took place on Monday afternoon.”
According to Airlink CEO, de Villiers Engelbrecht, “There have been some encouraging developments, including high-level meetings with the relevant Mozambican banking and government officials as recently as Monday afternoon (August 25).
“On the basis of these good faith and frank discussions, we are optimistic that Mozambique’s authorities will swiftly provide a solution enabling Airlink to expedite the repatriation of its revenues generated from sales in that market.”
Airlink added that it continued to provide vital scheduled air services between South Africa and Mozambique with return flights to various destinations: Maputo, Beira, Nampula, Pemba, Tete and Vilanculos.
The flights to Maputo include 21 every week from Johannesburg and four from Cape Town.
From Johannesburg there are seven per week for each of the northern port destinations of Beira and Pemba.
Nampula is included in Airlink’s northern Mozambican port services, with three departing each week from Johannesburg.
Airlink flights to Vilanculos consist of seven per week from Johannesburg and four from Mbombela.
- On August 27 it was initially reported that ticket sales had been suspended. This was not the case. Freight News regrets the error.
