Beira offers the most costeffective ocean gateway in the region for neighbouring countries, according to Félix Machado, marketing and sales manager for the port of Beira. Beira is managed by Cornelder de Moçambique (CdM), which is a private joint venture between Mozambique Ports and Railways (CFM) and Cornelder Holdings based in Rotterdam – Holland. CdM has operated the container and general cargo terminals in the port of Beira since October 1998. It has analysed and compared the costs of moving cargo from Harare, Bulawayo, Lusaka, Kitwe, Lubumbashi, Blantyre and Lilongwe to Beira with the costs of using Durban and Dar es Salaam. Beira is both closer and much cheaper when compared on cost per kilometre, he says. “We are also on the safest corridors in Southern Africa – which further reduces the cost of shipping goods through the port,” he adds.
