A management system and
software developed in-house
by the Maputo Port Development
Company allows shippers of
commodities to track consignments
from mine to the time they are
loaded on board a vessel.
“We have changed the
philosophy of the stockpiles,”
says Johann Botha, commercial
director of the Maputo Port
Development Company.
There are now weighbridges at
the entry to the stacks where all
vehicles are weighed in and out.
“We weigh again when the
commodity is taken from the
stockpile to the vessel, and
again on the quayside.
“This is one of the ways in
which we are adding value.
Agents or traders can now track
the load all the way from the
mine to the time it is loaded
onto the vessel. They can
identify any discrepancies,” he
says.
The benefit to the port is also
that it can manage its stockpiles
better because there is realtime
information about what is
being stored where and in what
quantities.
“And a client in Johannesburg
can log on and see exactly what
is in the stockpile,” he says.
Systems enable users to monitor stockpiles remotely
