Freight forwarders
and shippers moving
goods in and out of
Mozambique would
benefit from making
greater use of
Mozambican
hauliers says
Aly Lalgy,
general manager
of Maputobased
Lalgy
Transporters.
One of the
oldest transport
companies in
Mozambique, it
operates throughout the
country with a f leet of over 500
vehicles.
Its trailer f leet includes
f latbeds, tippers, super
links, skeletal tankers
and low bed units.
Founded as a haulier
in 1989, the company
has diversified into
construction and
liquid bulk, as well
as out-of-gauge
cargo.
It also provides
dedicated f leets of
trucks on a project
basis to a number of clients.
“In short, we offer a full
range of professional transport
services.”
Mozambican
transporters
have similar
capabilities
to their South
African
counterparts,
but are often
overlooked
by freight
forwarders
based in South
Africa in
particular.
He encourages cargo owners
not to rely solely on their
forwarders and to request
that quotes be obtained from
Mozambican operators as well
as those based in South Africa.
This will help open up the
market and keep rates in check
through greater competition.
It will also help
exporters into
Mozambique to
strengthen their
distribution
networks.
“We have
facilities up
north such as
warehouses and
yards which can
be used by our
customers.”
Mozambican
drivers and trucking companies
also know the roads, which
remain a “challenge” due to
maintenance and investment
backlogs in places.
INSERT & CAPTION
Shippers should request
that quotes be obtained
from Mozambican
operators as well as those
based in South Africa.
