LEONARD NEILL THE OPENING of a fourth silo at Maputo’s sugar terminal last month has encouraged Mpumalanga’s Tsb Sugar to reroute a considerable volume of its exports from Durban to the Mozambique port. The Maputo terminal now has capacity for 175 000 tons. Tsb Sugar will increase its bulk raw export through the port from 100 000 tons to 250 000 tons a year over the next three years, according to a company spokesman. Much of the previous supply was sent through Durban’s 525 000 ton capacity facility. Maputo is 90km from Tsb’s Komati mill. Durban is 600km away, translating into a considerable saving in transport costs. Tsb also exports 90 000 tons of white sugar refined at the Malelane mill and then sent to Maputo for storage in bulk form in that port’s ED&F Mann Warehouse.
