RAY SMUTS STAR REEFERS has entered into an agreement to acquire six specialised reefer vessels of the Polar class for an aggregate price of US$117.3 million. Built in 1992 and 1993, the vessels are currently on time charter to the company, an arrangement that will be cancelled when they are delivered during the third quarter of this year. The agreement is subject to approval by the sellers’ shareholders and buyer’s board. Following delivery of the Polar class vessels and another acquisition, the Consensus Reefer, STAR Reefers will own a fleet of 24 vessels, with six on bare boat charter and seven on time-charter. “This takes our number of acquisitions to eight in the past nine months, says STAR Reefers’ South African representative, Heidi Rousseau.
