Morné Engelbrecht, logistics coordinator for Airfreight Courier Transport Logistics (ACT), is one of a handful of radiation safety officers in Namibia. It goes with the job – ACT is one of the main courier companies servicing the growing uranium mining sector in the country. Exports and imports of radioactive materials are controlled by the Atomic Energy and Radiation Protection Act No 5 of 2005. ACT is licensed by the Namibian Radiation Protection Authority to transport radioactive shipments. Cargo consists mainly of samples and nuclear gauges, neither of which poses health risks when handled correctly. His task is to ensure that the shipments are securely packed according to international standards, and that the radiation management plan in place is followed to ensure safe transport. ACT offers a full door-to-door international courier service for the shipments, which includes clearing and forwarding and transport at pick-up and delivery. “With dangerous cargo we prefer to take full responsibility for and control of the shipment,” he adds. Another category of dangerous goods that is also growing is ammunition for hunting. “Namibia has a reputation for good hunting, and this sector has grown immensely,” he says.
