Shared information will help speed vessel turnaround

STRIDES ARE being made at the container terminal, according to Portnet's Tau Morwe, who is the first to admit that efficiency has been well below par.
P&O Ports consultants are now running the terminal, and we are interviewing for a general manager.
The current handling rate varies between 18 and 22 containers per hour, according to Morwe, but rates of 31 moves an hour are recorded from time to time.
Given the condition of the equipment, he believes the optimum rate would be around 22 an hour.
In terms of vessel turnaround, Morwe admits that there are problems within Portnet. But there are also problems caused by the shipping lines.
The sharing of information between ourselves and them leaves much to be desired.
We will however be appointing account managers to look at problems on both sides and how these can be resolved.
