The 95th electric locomotive
was rolled out of Transnet
Engineering’s production
line last week – realising
Transnet Engineering’s
ambitions of becoming
an original equipment
manufacturer (OEM).
85 of the 95 locomotives
Transnet bought from China
South Rail (CSR) were
assembled
in South Africa at Transnet’s
manufacturing and
engineering facility in
Pretoria.
“We hope to see South Africa
building the capacity and
capability to manufacture its
own locomotives in the future,
which we should be able to
export,” said president Jacob
Zuma, speaking at the unveiling
of the new locomotive.
