SA Revenue Service (Sars) has recovered R57-million in unpaid dues after tracking down 259 cases of irregular imports of clothing, textiles and footwear between March and September, according to spokesperson Tasneem Carrim.
In one instance, five tons of smuggled second-hand clothing was confiscated.
Where fraud is suspected, the matters have been referred to the police for further investigation, she says.
