Sars to launch container scanner at Beitbridge

The South African Revenue Service (Sars) will launch a mobile container scanner at the Beitbridge border post by the end of this year.

This according to Sars executive: customs operations, Penny Bologo. Speaking at the 3rd Logistics Business Breakfast, hosted jointly by the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Southern Africa Shippers, Transport and Logistics Council, Bologo said this followed the launch earlier this year of one at the Port of Cape Town. The first scanner was launched in Durban last year.

Responding to concerns raised around limited infrastructure on the Zimbabwean side of the border, Bologo noted that that the scanner would, in the interim, be housed in a dedicated building but would be moved once the larger one-stop-border post had been created.

“That’s why we made it mobile,” she said. The scanner forms part of the Sars modernisation programme.
