MORE STRINGENT regulations have been introduced at the Beit Bridge border post by South African Revenue Services (SARS) which has established a compliance section, staffed only by senior officers.
The unit's method of operation involves risk analysis on all consignments, profiling of transport operators and goods, and targeting specific commodities such as drugs.
We may often be seen as operating somewhat negatively but there are aspects of some transporters and their goods which have shown us the pattern in which drugs and other contraband are being conveyed, and we have our sights set on them, says section manager Gift Mashaba.
I am satisfied that great results will follow and at least R240 million can be added to our collections here annually.
Irregularities in both import and export clearances have been earmarked for immediate attention, and a management information system has been set up.
Proper vision and commitment of this nature not only augurs well for Beit Bridge but for SARS in general, says Mashaba.
