Ferrochrome shipper switches from Maputo to Durban
A CONSIGNMENT OF 30 000 tons of high carbon ferrochrome has been railed from Zimbabwe to Durban for export purposes, and has led to Zimasco, the main Zimbabwe producer of the product, opening negotiations with Spoornet to handle its entire loads in future.
Traditionally Zimasco's annual production of 250 000 tons is exported through Maputo, but the Zimbabwe company opted recently to make use of a South African port because of what it calls the deterioration of storage facilities at Maputo harbour and the risk associated with contamination and reliability in general.
A complete freight logistic solution involving outsourcing of services like wagon ordering, trace and tracking from Gweru to Durban harbour, off loading of rail wagons, storage at salt bins, loading and road transportation to ships side, shipping, stevedoring, clearing and forwarding documentation have been offered by Spoornet. The income value of the project amounted to R7,5m.
