THE SA Revenue Services (SARS) claims that there is still “gross misuse” of the 70707070 general importer’s code (normally for once-off imports) and has stated that it will be focusing on all declarations made using this code. “If you try to use the code for a second import consignment, remember that you need to be registered as an importer,” said Deloitte senior manager, Andre Erasmus. “Therefore, ensure that you have obtained a valid customs code for the type of customs and/or excise business you undertake to avoid running foul of the customs provisions.” And he also reminded importers, you will need to declare each type of customs process that your business undertakes - including imports, exports, manufacture of excisable goods and use of bonded warehouses or rebate provisions.
